Online Orientation Classes for Newly Admitted Students

Welcome to the MGH Institute of Health Professions and best wishes as you participate in our dynamic learning environment. This page contains information on accessing our web-based orientation resources.

An Institute network account and email address is being created for you. You will receive information about your account via the email address you provided during the application process prior to the start of the semester. Your Institute email address is the official means by which information is communicated to students, faculty and staff.

Additionally, you will receive accounts to both IOnline, our student information system, and Desire2Learn, the Institute’s courseware platform which is used as a resource in online and onsite courses.

“Preparing For Your Arrival To The Institute” exists as an ‘online course’ in Desire2Learn (D2L) and is an opportunity for you to receive information that will assist you prior to your arrival at the Institute. You will also be enrolled in a program specific online orientation class that will help you with your program specific questions/requirements.

In addition to orientation information, you also now have an opportunity to interact with other new students, faculty and staff. We encourage you to use these resources and feel free to ask questions in the discussion areas. Keep in mind that everyone will see your question and anyone (students, faculty and staff) can respond and contribute.

If you have a personal question you do not want to post to a discussion, feel free to email any faculty or staff and you will receive a prompt response.

To access this website use the following link that will take you to the Institute’s website: We recommend adding this link to your ‘Favorites’ or ‘Bookmarks.’  Once on the page, click on Log In on the upper right side of the Institute’s homepage and then click Desire2Learn from the panel that is displayed. This will take you to the D2L login page.

Here are the technical requirements for accessing your two online orientation classes:

  1. Computer: You need access to a computer (PC or Mac) capable of running current software and web browsers. Anything that was new in the past three years should be fine.
  2. Internet Access You must have some type of internet access either through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as Verizon, Comcast or Earthlink or through your place of work. If you rely on your employer’s internet connection, be aware that certain websites may be restricted, including D2L.
  3. Web Browser D2L supports all updated versions of Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Chrome.
  4. Additional Software or Plug-ins Some of the documents, which are made available to you in Orientation 101, may be in various file formats (typically PowerPoint, Word or PDF files). To open these files you will need the appropriate software or software viewer plug-in. If you do not have Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007, you can download the free MS Word and PowerPoint viewers from Microsoft.  You may also need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF files.

Once logged into D2L, you will be in your ‘My Home’ page. Please take the time to create a profile of yourself for everyone to get to know more about you. Click on the drop down arrow next to your name in the top right-hand corner of the page and click ‘Profile’.

Under the ‘My Courses’ widget on the left-hand side of the screen, you will see a link to both of your Orientation classes. Once in your course, click ‘Course Materials’ in the menu and then click ‘Content’ to get started.

The students, faculty and staff look forward to welcoming you in person and online as the newest members of our dynamic health care learning community!

If you have any questions or need any assistance, feel free to open a help ticket.
