Institute Scholarships

Each of the below programs has an Admissions Committee that reviews all applications to determine scholarship recipients.

Last academic year, the MGH Institute of Health Professions provided $8 million in scholarships and grants. Approximately 25% of incoming students in entry-level programs receive scholarship.

School of Nursing:

  • Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Direct-Entry Master of Science in Nursing

School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences:

  • Entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy
  • Entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy
  • Master of Physician Assistant Studies
  • Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Master of Science in Genetic Counseling

The Institute utilizes endowed gifts from donors to support ongoing student scholarships. You do not apply for these scholarships. They will be offered based on the strength of your application. The scholarships cover varying amounts of the total cost of tuition and fees for the program, ranging from 25% to 100%.

 

Institute Scholarship Requirements

In order to maintain an Institute Scholarship, recipients must meet all MGH Institute requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress. More information regarding our Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy can be found in the student catalog.

Scholarships are awarded as funding for program tuition only. They are not granted toward fees or living expenses.

Outside Scholarships

We strongly encourage students to apply for outside scholarships. Each year, many of our students receive some funding from organizations outside MGH IHP.

Specific outside scholarships are sorted by degree program below.

  • Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions offers an annual scholarship recognizing outstanding students in the health professions who are achieving excellence in their academic programs and have significant potential to assume future leadership roles in health professions. Each student chosen for an award will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The most exemplary Scholarship of Excellence recipient will also receive the “Elwood Scholar” award, qualifying an additional $1,000 in scholarship funds. All degree levels are eligible and financial need is not a criterion. 
  • The Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF), Inc. provides funds to advance education in fulfillment of its mission: “To promote life-long learning.” The Foundation provides financial support to graduate students, post freshman students and nonprofit organizations serving diverse groups.
  • The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain manages over 50 scholarship funds which annually award more than $250,000 in tuition assistance. They offer Scholarships for Students Post-High School, specifically if you graduated from the following Connecticut towns: Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, Southington, Farmington, Newington and Wethersfield.
  • Discover Student Loans is offering 12 eligible students or parents a $5,000 scholarship to help cover college expenses.
  • F.A. Davis is dedicated to developing teaching and learning solutions that meet the needs of nursing and health science students, educators, and practitioners. To stay committed to our goal of shaping the future of nursing and health science education, F.A. Davis is proud to offer annual scholarships to support those aspiring to work in healthcare.
  • The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) empowers students and parents with the knowledge and resources to successfully complete a higher education, while providing support services and scholarships to as many exceptional students, Scholars, and Alumni as possible. 
  • The Indian Health Service (IHS) Scholarship Program provides qualified American Indian and Alaska Native health professions students an opportunity to establish an educational foundation for each stage of your pre-professional careers. If you are willing to commit to working in Indian health communities where you can truly make a difference, we encourage you to take the next step toward realizing your future. The scholarship program provides financial support in exchange for a minimum two-year service commitment within an Indian health program in your chosen health professional discipline.
  • The Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) is dedicated to promoting the exchange of medical and educational information between the U.S. and Japan, as well as in providing valuable medical information to the general public. By submitting the single application, you are applying for scholarships from various donor sources. The amount of the awards varies depending on the donor but have ranged from $2,500 up to $12,000 in the past.
  • The Joanne Wood Scholarship is intended to honor the life and memory of Joanne Wood, this fund shall provide financial support to graduate students pursuing degrees in business, math, or science.
  • The LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) helps youth in underserved communities make the dream of college enrollment a reality. A rigorous selection process assures the expectation that future recipients will demonstrate the same level of excellence.
  • The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military children.
  • The MetroWest Health Foundation scholarships are provided to students who are residents of one of the 25 towns in our MetroWest service area. Students must be accepted into an eligible nursing, medical, or clinical program at an accredited academic institution.
  • The Public Health Scholarship Research Guide provides a variety of scholarship options for students earning a public health degree. 
  • The Roothbert Fund assists those in need of financial aid to further their education. The Fund seeks candidates motivated by spiritual values. Preference to candidates who reside in or attend schools in these states: Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, or West Virginia.
  • Sallie Mae's Bridging the Dream Scholarship is for students facing financial challenges and will award up to a $10,000 scholarship to help them pay for their graduate or professional degree program.
  • The TYLENOL® Future Care Scholarship is awarded to well deserving students pursuing careers in healthcare. Scholarships will be awarded to students and practitioners who are seeking a degree to actively treat patients.
  • The United Negro College Fund, Inc. (UNCF) is the nation’s largest private scholarship provider to minority group members.
  • The AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health and Disability is awarded annually to deserving students with a disability who are pursuing studies related to health and disability. To include, but not limited to public health, health promotion, disability studies, disability research, rehabilitation engineering, audiology, disability policy, special education and majors that will impact quality of life of persons with disabilities.
  • The American Academy of Audiology Foundation is committed to doctoral students as they continue their academic career learning exceptional clinical skills and exploring contemporary avenues of research that will advance the treatment of people with hearing and balance problems. Our scholarships are funded by corporate, industry, and individual donors who support hearing and balance wellness.
  • The American Speech-Language-Hearing (ASH) Foundation offers research grants, scholarships, and clinical achievement awards for CSD or related discipline students. Such as, Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.
  • The AMN Healthcare Med Travelers Scholarship is awarded twice a year to current Speech-Language Pathology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and School Psychology graduate students.
  • Bilingual Therapies invests in the future of bilingual speech-language pathology and school psychology students by offering student scholarships to those who are entering their last academic year.
  • The HIE Help Center Scholarship is offered to Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy students. The HIE Help Center serves as an informational resource guide for families of children with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). It is sponsored by ABC Law Centers, a birth trauma law firm.
  • The National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing lists scholarship opportunities geared towards Speech-Language Pathology students of color.
  • National AMBUCS, Inc. has awarded scholarships to students pursuing degrees in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology and hearing audiology. Awards are based on financial need, commitment to local community, character for compassion and integrity, and career objectives.
  • Teach.com offers a list of 25 Speech Pathology Scholarships for Graduate Students from a wide range of scholarship organizations.
  • The American Occupational Therapy Foundation Scholarship Program allows you to submit one application to be considered for all the scholarships they offer. Although each award has its own requirements, all recipients must be currently enrolled full time in an OT educational program. You must also be an AOTA member.
  • The AMN Healthcare Med Travelers Scholarship is awarded twice a year to current Speech-Language Pathology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and School Psychology graduate students.
  • The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) offers Medical, Nursing and Occupational/Physical Therapy Scholarships. Each scholarship has its own eligibility requirements and application process.
  • The HIE Help Center Scholarship is offered to Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy students.   • The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) awards scholarships and loan repayment to primary care providers in eligible disciplines, including Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. This is a government-sponsored program of the Health Resources and Services Administration.
  • The Physician Associate (PA) Foundation has awarded more than $2.3 million in scholarships to PA students, benefitting more than 1,400 future PAs. Scholarships are awarded based on the availability of funds provided through contributions from AAPA members, other individuals, and corporate partners.
  • The AMN Healthcare Med Travelers Scholarship is awarded twice a year to current Speech-Language Pathology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and School Psychology graduate students.

  • The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) offers resources for scholarships, grants/fellowships, loan forgiveness, and additional aid for nursing students in baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral programs.
  • The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) AACN’s Continuing Professional Development Scholarships help you continue your professional and personal growth. This opportunity is available to AACN members exclusively.
  • The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) As nurse practitioners (NPs) are securing their place on the front lines of health care, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) is here with the funding opportunities you need to continue to advance the NP profession and enhance patient care. From scholarships and grants to research awards and external funding information, AANP members have access to a host of opportunities that open doors to a world of knowledge and educational experiences.
  • The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) One of the purposes of the AAOHN Foundation is to advance knowledge in occupational and environmental health through awarding grants and scholarships to occupational and environmental health professionals to support ongoing education and research.
  • The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) supports your professional goals and helps you maintain evidence-based knowledge and competencies. They have awarded scholarships to more than 3,000 nurses working to earn a degree, achieve advanced certification, and complete continuing nurse education.
  • The Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) provides scholarships for their members to advance their professional development and their practice.
  • The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) offers Medical, Nursing and Occupational/Physical Therapy Scholarships. Each scholarship has its own eligibility requirements and application process.
  • The Emergency Nurses Association Foundation Scholarship Program To further advance emergency nursing, the ENA Foundation proudly offers educational scholarships annually. Offerings include academic scholarships, available to members and nonmembers seeking to further their education with degrees ranging from associates to doctoral degrees, as well as conference scholarships for members interested in attending ENA’s annual education and networking event.
  • The Foundation of the National Student Nurses’ Association, Inc. (FNSNA) offers scholarships to nursing students enrolled in state-approved nursing programs leading to an associate degree, baccalaureate, diploma, direct-entry master’s degree; or enrolled in an RN to BSN completion, RN to MSN completion, or LPN/LVN to RN program.
  • The Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA) provides Excellence Awards, Foundation Grants and Scholarships. Nominators and nominees must be regular or associate GAPNA members in good standing for a minimum of one year. The nominations are tallied in July and the recipients are announced every year during the Awards Celebration at the GAPNA Annual Conference.
  • Johnson & Johnson Nursing is a web site sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems, Inc. that provides a multitude of resources for nurses, including a nursing scholarship inventory.
  • The March of Dimes Graduate Nursing Scholarship to recognize and promote excellence in nursing care of mothers and babies, the March of Dimes offers several $5,000 scholarships annually to registered nurses enrolled in graduate programs of maternal-child nursing. The March of Dimes Nurse Advisory Council, a group of distinguished perinatal nurses, chooses the recipients. Applications are due every January.
  • The Mary Cafolla Wallace Nursing Scholarship Program: supports adult students (ages 24-55) residing in Massachusetts, who are pursuing a second career in nursing, to obtain their Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing at nursing schools in New England. Scholarship amounts will be up to $20,000 per year. The program is funded by the Timothy and Deborah Moore Charitable Foundation and administered by The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI).
  • The Massachusetts Nurses Foundation (MNA) offers a multitude of scholarships to nursing students.
  • The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) offers Research Grants to nurses or nursing students. The fellowship grants are offered to promising recipients of MD, PhD or MD/PhD degrees when it appears that the program of training to be supported by the grant will enhance the likelihood that the trainee will perform meaningful and independent research relevant to MG in the future and obtain a suitable position that will enable them to do so.
  • The National Black Nurses Association, Inc. (NBNA) offers scholarships to members of NBNA who are currently enrolled in a nursing program (BSN, AD, Diploma or LPN / LVN, Masters, and Doctoral) and has at least one full year of school remaining.
  • The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) awards scholarships and loan repayment to primary care providers in eligible disciplines, including Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. This is a government-sponsored program of the Health Resources and Services Administration.
  • The Navy Nurse Corps Association (NNCA) awards scholarships to deserving nursing students and current/former Navy Nurses.
  • The New England Regional Black Nurses Association, Inc. They are committed to supporting minorities of African descent (according to federal guidelines) for education in the field of nursing. Our communities need health care providers who understand the issues and the strategies that will promote effective change in the health status of people of African descent.
  • The Nurse Corps Scholarship Program is for eligible nursing students to receive funding for tuition, fees, and other educational costs. In exchange, they must work at a facility with a critical shortage of nurses—a Critical Shortage Facility (CSF)—upon graduation. This is a government-sponsored program of the Health Resources and Services Administration.
  • The Nurses Educational Funds, Inc. organizes and distributes funds to registered nurses for graduate study. Must be a member of a professional nursing association – such as the American Nurses Association, or specialty organization and/or evidence of international honor society membership (Sigma Theta Tau International).
  • Nursing Scholarship.us has a database that is constantly updated to include the latest public and private scholarships, as well as research grants for undergraduate and graduate school.
  • Sigma Theta Tau International Eligible students must be enrolled in either an Accelerated Second Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice program at an accredited U.S. school of nursing. Funding is up to $5,000 per academic year.

Student Work Opportunities

MGH Institute academic programs and departments fund Graduate Assistantships, research assistant, teaching assistant and other work opportunities for IHP students, allowing students to earn a small stipend to offset some of their educational costs. The opportunities are limited and not guaranteed as they become available as needed, and are managed through the Human Resources Department.
