Tuition Reduction and Incentive Plan

The MGH Institute of Health Professions offers special reduced tuition benefits to all employees of Mass General Brigham, including all its members and affiliates. Through the IHP Tuition Reduction and Incentive Plan, you have access to a variety of benefits to support your ongoing professional development and accelerate your career growth.

The plan replaces the Institute’s current voucher system. All previously issued non-expired vouchers will be honored through summer of 2024. Please note that employees will not be able to combine vouchers with Tuition Reduction incentives.

As an MGB employee, you are eligible for additional benefits:

  • Special discounts on professional development and continuing education programs offered by the IHP.
  • In 2024, MGB will provide tuition assistance of up to $5,250 annually for full-time employees and $2,625 annually for part-time employees. For more information on the new 2024 tuition assistance program please review the Fact Sheet and FAQ.

Institute employees are not eligible for this Tuition Reduction Incentive Plan.

Separately, the IHP offers a Tuition Remission Program to qualified faculty, staff, administration, and dependent children and non-dependent children (up to age 27) of qualified employees. The amount of the scholarship granted will depend on your eligibility status described on our benefits page.

Students who are accepted into a degree-seeking program may also apply for federal loans using the FAFSA at studentaid.gov.  Students must be at least ½ time status to receive these loans.

Students in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program cannot receive both an Institute discount and an Institute scholarship.  The Bursar will apply the higher of the two awards.

Check with your employer to access your MGB education and/or training benefit. These may be used in conjunction with the Tuition Reduction and Incentive Plan.

CPD, Prerequisites and Non-degree courses do not qualify for financial aid because the employees enrolled in these programs are classified as non-matriculated students.

The IHP will not issue new vouchers after the Spring 2022 term. Vouchers expire after two years, and we will honor all unexpired vouchers through the Summer of 2024. Employees cannot use both a voucher and the discount – we will compare the impact of voucher use with the calculated discount and offer the greater of the two. All voucher rules and regulations in place at the time of issuance are applicable, and monitored by the Registrar and Bursar’s Office.

Vouchers

Vouchers may be used through the summer of 2024 in any combination for any Institute course under the terms and conditions described within this policy. Vouchers will be accepted from any employee of the Agency or Institution to which the voucher was awarded. The employee of the Agency or Institution may enroll in courses on a space available basis.

Only official, original, and non-expired vouchers will be accepted. Faxed or copied forms will not be accepted.

Exception: If the voucher was originally emailed to the clinical site and subsequently emailed to a student for use, the student may then email the voucher to the IHP for redemption.

A voucher can only be redeemed once. Tuition vouchers have no cash value and expire two years after the issue date.

Verification of employment by the agency or institution that was issued the voucher must be noted on the voucher itself.

Credit Bearing Courses
  1. Non-Degree students: While in Non-Degree Status, there is no limit to the number of vouchers that may be applied towards tuition costs. Note: Non-degree students who choose to apply for matriculated status should refer to the Non-Degree section of the Institute’s website to review the number of non-degree credits that can be applied to an Institute degree or certificate program.
  2. Matriculated students: When a student matriculates into a new degree/certificate program, a maximum of twelve (12) credits worth of vouchers may be applied toward their tuition. This maximum will also apply to students who change from certificate to degree programs within an Institute program. Use of vouchers may result in an adjustment to student financial aid awards.
  3. If a student drops the course or withdraws from the Institute, the voucher is forfeited and cannot be reused.
  4. Vouchers must be redeemed by the 12th class day of the semester of enrollment. For shortened modules, vouchers must be redeemed by the 5th class day of the module.
  5. Fees are separate from tuition and not covered by vouchers; students are responsible for paying all fees.
Continuing Education Courses
  1. In some instances vouchers may be redeemed for continuing education offerings.
  2. A one-credit voucher may be redeemed for up to 15 contact hours. Additional vouchers will be required for offerings with more than 15 contact hours. Please refer to course enrollment information to determine eligibility.
  3. If a student drops the course, the voucher is forfeited and cannot be reused.
  4. Vouchers must be redeemed by the start date of the course.
