Grow as a simulation educator

This fully-online certificate program explores current and emerging simulation education and operational strategies used to meet learning outcomes. All courses are grounded in educational theory, evidence-based practices, and taught by internationally known experts. Learners self-reflect throughout the program to identify strengths and areas for further development in simulation.

The simulation-based education courses are built around the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) Accreditation Standards, and the Simulation Capability Framework used by the SimGHOST organization.

Throughout our program, you'll be immersed in an interprofessional approach to teaching and learning, a hallmark of the MGH Institute and something that sets us apart from other programs. If you desire, you can continue into the Master's program after earning your certificate to further develop your knowledge and build expertise and leadership in curriculum design, program evaluation, and educational research.

In addition, we include an opportunity for a deep dive into emotional intelligence (EI), a core component of a successful simulation debriefing, and a course in leadership that provides an opportunity for you to tailor your leadership skills for the rapidly changing simulation environment.

Adapt your study to focus on areas of health professions education most applicable to your goals. Your courses are largely project-based so that you can advance your skills and apply what you are learning as you learn it.

Most of our scholars continue to work full time while earning their certificate, and many have young families or other responsibilities. The weekly work effort expectation varies depending on the course and one’s familiarity with its content and literature. Learning about a concept for the first time will take longer than reading about one with which you are already familiar. Most people dedicate 3-6 hours per week for each three-credit course.

Learners will choose courses, totaling 9 credits, from the following course list. Courses do not have prerequisites and can be taken in any order.

  • HE- 734 (Summer) Distance Simulation Educational Resources and Environment (1 credit)
  • HE-722 (Summer) Assessment in Simulation-Based Education (3 cr)
  • HE-720 (Fall) Foundations of Simulation-based Education and Operations (3 cr)
  • HE-730 (Fall, Spring) Foundations of Distance Simulation (1 credit)
  • HE-721 (Spring) Simulation-Based Educational Technologies (3 cr)
  • HE-718 (Spring) Leading with Emotional Intelligence (3 cr)
  • HE-733 (Spring) Educational Principles Applied to Distance Simulation (1 credit)
  • HE-746 (Fall, Spring) Leadership in Health Professions Education (3 cr)*

Six total credits can be transferred into the MS program, as elective credits. *746 is a required MS class but can be used in the MS simulation professional certificate program.

From start to finish, my courses were designed with the simulation operator in mind. We were able to take each weeks’ lesson and begin applying it to our own organizations. Even the data sets we were provided were taken from real simulation activities which made learning even more engaging.
