Grow as an educator

In our fully-online teaching & learning certificate, apply principles of instructional design, evaluate assessment techniques for instructional effectiveness, and adapt design and assessment best practices for effective instruction in the academic or clinical setting.

Throughout our program, you'll be immersed in an interprofessional approach to teaching and learning, a hallmark of the MGH Institute and something that sets us apart from other programs. If you desire, you can continue into the Master's program after earning your certificate to further develop your knowledge and build expertise and leadership in curriculum design, program evaluation, and educational research.

Our unique partnerships with the Harvard Macy Institute (HMI) and Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) provide ways for you to utilize their courses toward your toward your MS-HPEd degree or certificate.

Adapt your study to focus on areas of health professions education most applicable to your goals. Your courses are largely project-based so that you can advance your skills and apply what you are learning as you learn it.

Most of our scholars continue to work full time while earning their Health Professions Teaching and Learning Certificate, and many have young families or other responsibilities. The weekly work effort expectation varies depending on the course and one’s familiarity with its content and literature. Learning about a concept for the first time will take longer than reading about one with which the student is already familiar. Having said that, most people dedicate 3-6 hours per week for each three-credit course. Those who can protect dedicated time each week for their studies are more successful.

This 9-credit program is designed for clinician educators and new faculty who want to improve her/his educational practices through better understanding and experience with the foundations of teaching, learning, and educational effectiveness.

You are encouraged to enter the Certificate program with a specific course or learning experience you would like to develop through each of the 3-credit courses:

  • HE-712 Foundations in Teaching and Learning
  • HE-713 Foundations of Educational Effectiveness
  • HE-741 or 3 credits of other approved electives

The most valuable thing I got out of the Health Professions Education program was interprofessional education … I credit the IHP with starting me thinking about this in a systematic manner. Overall, a life-changing degree—and I really mean that! Would I do it again? Absolutely!
