Workshop: Designing Better Surveys for Education and Research

In this hands-on workshop, Dr. Anthony Artino, Associate Dean for Educational Research at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences, will review his seven-step survey design process, and participants will have the opportunity to critique several poorly written survey items and design their own items to measure a construct.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to...

  • Recognize how to use a systematic, seven-step process as a framework for survey design
  • Identify common item-writing pitfalls in survey design
  • Describe how to develop a set of items to characterize a construct
  • Define the purpose of expert validation, cognitive interviews, and pilot testing
