This presentation explores the importance of incorporating environmental determinants of health, such as indoor and outdoor air pollution and extreme heat into health professions education and identifies communities most at risk for unfavorable health outcomes. Available resources will be provided that can help students gain a better understanding of the health risks for the communities they serve. Interactive activities will be used to engage participants in exploring strategies to integrate this information into existing course content.
Learning Objectives
- At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Discuss how environmental conditions impact health
- Identify communities and populations most at-risk for unfavorable health outcomes related to environmental and climate hazards
- Identify useful strategies and resources to enhance students’ understanding of how environmental and climate hazards impact the health of the communities for whom they care
- Identify ways that this information can be integrated into existing course content
- Discuss how environmental conditions impact health
