When the Health Professional Is the Patient: Exploring the Complexities of Shifting Roles and Perspectives
The Ann W. Caldwell President's Lecture: Interprofessional Rounds occurs annually and brings together multiple professions to explore how individuals and teams can help to solve health-related challenges faced by individuals, communities, and society through compassionate care.
The 2025 Ann W. Caldwell President’s Lecture, When the Health Professional Is the Patient: Exploring the Complexities of Shifting Roles and Perspectives, explores the humanity of care through the unique lens of a health professional navigating a health crisis while adjusting to a shift in their role within the healthcare system. Some of the challenges health professionals can experience include emotional vulnerability, loss of control, overanalyzing their own care, identity struggles, and changes in positionality, which may require significant emotional and psychological adjustment and support. The topic will be examined from various perspectives including panelists with lived experiences who are willing to share their personal stories and those who have worked with health professionals during one of their most vulnerable seasons of life.
