Kristen Mahoney Shannon, MS, CGC, is a Professor in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and professor and advisory board member in the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program at MGH Institute of Health Professions. Ms. Shannon has worked as a clinical genetic counselor for over 20 years, specializing in oncology genetics services. In her current role, she serves as Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center’s Genetics Program and the Director of Genetic Counseling in the Massachusetts General Hospital's Department of Medicine. 

Ms. Shannon played an instrumental role in the establishment of licensure for genetic counselors in the state of Massachusetts and has served on the Massachusetts Genetic Counselor Licensure board in various roles. She has served on multiple committees, subcommittees, and working groups of the National Society of Genetic Counselors. She is an active member of the NCCN Genetic Familial High-Risk Assessment: Breast and Ovarian Panel as well as the American Society of Clinical Oncology PLWC Advisory Board.

Research Interests

Ms. Shannon’s research interests include genetic counseling and testing in the oncology setting, service delivery models within cancer genetic testing, and genetic counseling outcomes. 

Ms. Shannon has lectured and published widely in the fields of cancer genetics and cancer genetic counseling and is a co-author of the March 2023 book, Counseling About Cancer: Strategies for Genetic Counseling.
