Professor Atwood is the former acting director of the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program (CSD) at MGH Institute of Health Professions, and former Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Speech-Language Pathology Department.
Her professional interests and teaching are focused in the areas of medical speech-language pathology, fluency disorders and transgender speech.
Professor Atwood retired in May 2012 and was accorded the status of Professor Emerita.
She is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language Association (ASHA) and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Massachusetts Speech-Language Hearing Association.
She has served on many ASHA boards, given invited papers at professional meetings and serves as a student advisor at the Institute.
Each year at graduation the Julie Atwood Award for Excellence in CSD is given to the outstanding student who demonstrated both academic and clinical excellence.
