John H. “Joe” Knowles is CEO of the Institute for Health Metrics (IHM), a nonprofit incubator of  information-based solutions to improve quality and outcomes in healthcare. He is also Founder  and Vice Chair of IHM Services Company, a venture-backed, for-profit subsidiary of the Institute,  which provides clinical quality and regulatory reporting for over 100 hospitals across the country.  IHM holds data on over 25 million patient encounters, and was awarded its fourth NIH grant as a  sub-grantee to Boston Medical Center.

Prior to IHM, Joe was a co-founder of Brooktrout Technology, a provider of telecom software and hardware platforms, as well as LittlePoint Corporation, whose sustained release products included the first insect repellent for children registered by US EPA. He holds three patents related to formulations chemistry. Joe is currently a Member of CRICO Strategies Committee, Trustee of Essex County Community Foundation, and Treasurer of the Evelyn Lily Lutz Foundation.

Joe holds an AB (Government, 1979) from Harvard College, an MBA (Marketing, 1983) from Columbia University and an MPH (Family and Community Health, 2002) from Harvard School of Public Health, where he was a Visiting Scientist in the Department of Society, Human Development and Health from 2002 to 2010.  Joe’s father, Dr. John Hilton Knowles, as General Director of MGH at the time, was instrumental in envisioning and later founding of the Institute.
