Five members of the MGH Institute community attended the Racial Equity and Justice Institute Summit in Bridgewater, Mass. on November 13, where a new handbook featuring a chapter from the MGH Institute JEDI Office was unveiled.
Kimberly A. Truong, the Institute’s Chief Equity Officer; Rosemary Caron, dean of the School of Healthcare Leadership; Peter Cahn, associate provost for academic affairs; Steve Cieslielski, assistant dean for student success, nursing; and Callie Watkins Liu, director of JEDI Education and Programs heard from racial equity leaders who provided a framework for imagining an equity-minded Higher Education organization.
“It was energizing to be in community with colleagues from across the region dedicated to student success,” said Cahn of the Summit. “Working for equity improves outcomes for all students. The talks looked at dismantling structural disadvantages faced by members of minoritized groups and leveraging trustees to hold everyone accountable for advancing equity.”
The MGH Institute’s JEDI Office contributed a chapter in the Racial Equity and Justice Practitioner Handbook, a free resource that shares strategies to advance equity-minded systemic change to transform higher education through racially equitable action. Watkins Liu led a round table discussion on the book chapter, which was co-authored with two School of Nursing Alumni, Corliss Kanazao and Kana Sakai, and focuses on the creation of the JEDI Core Competencies and how it has been used at the MGH Institute.
“The audience was curious to hear how we worked collaboratively to design and implement the framework,” said Cahn.
