“Research is not just one part of what we do — it is central to who we are as an institution.”
Associate Provost for Research Nara Gavini used those words to open Friday's 2026 Research and Scholarship Day; his point was then reinforced over the next few hours as researchers showcased their work through presentations and posters at the event in 1CW.
Gavini shared the transformative growth of research at the MGH Institute, especially over the last five years where research funding doubled to $52 million in FY25. In the last year, there were 124 grant applications, a 45% increase over the previous year, with 346 publications and 366 presentations.
“That means that MGH Institute researchers presented at a rate of one a day and nearly did the same for publications,” Gavini shared.
Some of that research was highlighted in the event’s two keynote speeches. Chief Scientific Officer and Director of the Speech and Feeding Disorders Lab Jordan Green shared his research related to clinical applications of speech analytics and AI, and Director of the Speech and Language (SAiL) Literacy Lab Tiffany Hogan discussed implementing the science of reading for vulnerable learners.
Hogan also spoke about the latest work being done by the Center for Translational Research, Implementation Science, and dissemination for Equity (cTIDE). The directors of several other MGH Institute Centers of Excellence also spoke to the packed audience, including Janice Palaganas from the Center of Excellence in Healthcare Simulation Research; Kim Erler from Tedy’s Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery; and Laura Wolford from the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Center.
For the final two hours of the day, attendees visited the approximately 50 posters set up and discuss the studies with the researchers. See some of the poster presenters in the image gallery below.
