There were a lot more occupational therapists than usual on campus last Thursday night. More than two dozen OT alumni joined faculty and staff in 1CW to share updates on new jobs, catch up with classmates, network with new acquaintances, and reminisce with professors during the Third Annual OT Department Alumni Event.

"Our OT alumni carry the spirit of the IHP wherever they go and bringing them back to campus is a powerful reminder of the lifelong community we share,” said OT Department Chair Sarah McKinnon. “This event created space for mentorship and connection with faculty, students, and peers, and we are committed to creating more opportunities to strengthen those ties."

After spending time socializing over food and drinks, the attendees split into two groups to have “Conversations that Matter” based similar breakout groups held at the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) conference. Dr. McKinnon and Assistant Professor Mary O’Donnell updated one group on the advocacy efforts taking place and shared information on the recent trip to Washington, D.C. for AOTA’s Hill Day. The other group discussed assistive technology, artificial intelligence tools, and ethical OT practice with assistant professor Kevin Berner

"Hosting our alumni back in the department was energizing and inspiring,” said McKinnon. “These gatherings are more than celebrations. They are opportunities to continue building a vibrant, connected community that spans across generations of occupational therapists. We look forward to deepening alumni involvement, as their experiences and contributions help shape the future of our program and profession."
