Faculty and students from the MGH Institute of Health Professions' Alfaisal (MGH IHP AU) Master of Health Professions Education program made a significant impact at the prestigious Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH). The conference, which took place from January 20-24 in San Diego, California, is renowned as the preeminent global assembly of professionals dedicated to the advancement of healthcare simulation. It is becoming more and more competitive to have proposals accepted yet, at least half of IHP AU students get accepted, which speaks to the strength of our program and the quality of our education and our students.
Our students and faculty not only explored cutting-edge innovations and shared best practices but also showcased their compelling workshops derived from their intensive seminar work in 2023. These educational sessions are designed to hone the skills of healthcare simulation professionals, drive transformation in service delivery, and enhance patient safety through rigorous simulation training.
Distinguished Presentations by MGH IHP Alfaisal Faculty
Our esteemed MGH IHP AU faculty led a diverse array of workshops and presentations, demonstrating commitment to educational excellence and innovation:
- Dr. Janice Palaganas provided her expertise on reflective practices and feedback mechanisms, essential technology skills for virtual simulation, and the inception of a Healthcare Simulation Museum.
- Dr. Cynthia Mosher focused on the crafting of written distance simulation scenarios and the nuances of maintaining psychological safety in remote simulations and distance debriefings.
- Dr. Hani Lababidi emphasized the integration of human factors in understanding adverse events and shared insights on the assessment of nursing competencies through simulation.
- Dr. Rami Ahmed underscored the importance of technological proficiency for remote simulation educators and introduced novel approaches to debriefing sensitive scenarios, leveraging AI like Chat GPT in simulation design, and ensuring psychological safety in virtual environments.
- Dr. Suzie Kardong-Edgren illuminated the adaptation of pediatric emergency medicine curricula to diverse cultures, the deployment of virtual resuscitation rooms overseas, and the meticulous evaluation of simulation-based educational tools.
- Dr. Jill Sanko discussed the establishment and maintenance of research and training networks within the simulation community.
- Dr. Jared Kutzin leads the society as in-coming SSH President-Elect.
Innovative Student Workshops
Our students, pivotal to the future of healthcare simulation, also showcased their remarkable contributions:
- Sara Maaz & Sadek Obeidat shared their expertise in developing engaging written scenarios for distance simulation
- Sharouk Khanjar addressed the critical aspect of psychological safety in distance scenarios.
These workshops, integral to their coursework, underscore the practical and innovative nature of our MHPE Simulation Track program, reflecting our institute's ethos of real-world applicability and forward-thinking education. The MGH Institute of Health Professions continues to be a beacon of excellence, with our faculty and students leading the charge in revolutionizing healthcare simulation education.
