Chelsea High School students working with the La Colaborativa, a youth organization that looks to create pathways for social and economic advancement, participated in a Career Day at the MGH Institute last week to learn about various health professions. They toured the campus, heard from MGH Institute students, and took part in hands-on activities.
MGH Institute students from Nursing, Physician Assistant Studies, Communications Science and Disorders, Physical Therapy and Genetic Counseling shared the roles and responsibilities in their field and why they decided to pursue the discipline. The CHS students then were able to try the various tools and equipment that health professions use when delivering patient care, such as listening to lung sounds and checking blood pressure.
Following lunch, they spent time in the Simulation Lab, where they learned two handed CPR with Physician Assistant Studies faculty member Mimoza Shehu, Physical Therapy faculty member Gwen Larsen, and nursing student Ramon Yang. The CHS students also learned about the manikins with MGH Institute students Michaella Israel and Grace Lynch.
“This is an opportunity to expose these students to healthcare careers they may not know exist,” said School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Dean Laura Plummer. “It also lets them experience the work those professions do to see if it might interest them.”
