Innovation Project:
Title: “Integration of Occupational Therapy into the Pediatric Primary Care Team: An Approach to Improve Outcomes for Children and Youth Living in Rural Communities”
My innovation project proposes the integration of occupational therapy into pediatric primary care practices to address the unmet needs of children and youth in rural and remote areas. It highlights the critical gap in service provision for children in these underserved regions, who face a higher risk of adverse childhood events and associated negative health and developmental outcomes. This initiative lays the foundation for delivering comprehensive, coordinated, and accessible care in rural areas. Key components include a knowledge dissemination campaign aimed at educating key stakeholders—such as families and primary care providers—on the vital role of occupational therapy in primary care, fostering greater awareness and acceptance. Additionally, I have developed a strategic business plan designed to serve as a blueprint for collaborating with partner sites. Following graduation, my goal is to implement this innovation at a pilot site, working to improve outcomes, enhance care quality, and maximize access for children in need.
