What was your Innovation Project title?
Enhancing Fieldwork Preparation: An Acute Care Elective for Entry-level OT Education

Tell us about your Innovation Project.
My experience supervising level II fieldwork students in acute care was the inspiration for my Innovation Project. Many occupational therapy students are not prepared with the skills needed to succeed in the fast-paced and challenging environment of acute care. In addition to medical knowledge, students must be prepared with strong professional behaviors and resilience to manage the stress of the hospital environment. For my Innovation Project, I developed an acute care elective course for entry-level occupational therapy programs to support the development of clinical skills, professional behaviors, confidence and resilience needed to succeed in level II acute care fieldwork.

What do you think is special about the Post-Professional OTD program here at the MGH Institute?
I was initially very hesitant to complete an online program thinking that I would feel alone and isolated completing all my coursework online. But my experience was quite the opposite! The PP-OTD faculty is so supportive and has created a great sense of community among our cohort. I have created lasting relationships with OT colleagues that I never would have anticipated by participating in an online program.

Why did you choose to come to this program?
I chose this program because of the flexibility offered for working professional through a combination of live and asynchronous learning. I was also drawn to the emphasis placed on applying course content and assignments to my current practice setting.

What are your goals for the future after you graduate?
After graduation, I am looking forward to teaching a pilot of my acute care elective to entry-level OTD students at the MGHIHP and pursuing more opportunities in academia.
