This project features a self-management approach to manage chronic symptoms following COVID 19 infection, through an OT facilitated, virtual live group support setting. The content focuses on self-monitoring of symptoms and vitals, and includes modules on mindfulness, breathing, energy conservation, sleep, communication, and coping strategies over a 6-week program.
What do you think is special about the Post-Professional OTD program here at the MGH Institute?
My experience in the inaugural cohort was as successful as I could imagine. The passion of the team behind the PPOTD program has been responsive and efficient in taking feedback from the students and implementing a change, which parallels the values and course content of the program itself. The focus on JEDI and interprofessional collaboration are evident in the course design and content across IHP programs, which has added a lot of value to my journey!
Why did you choose to come to this program?
This program caught my attention as I considered what a virtual program could look like, and what principles were most important to me as a learner. I was uncertain of how engaging virtual school could be. I was amazed at the ability of our instructors and classmates to create an environment that felt both energizing and supportive, especially needed during pandemic times. The varied class sizes and efforts made for most students to attend the synchronous class had a positive impact on my transition into the world of e-learning. Having the opportunity to connect to the cohort and instructions during the on-site visit at completion of the program was a great way to tie it all back together.
What are your goals for the future after you graduate?
I’m interested in continuing my role as an inpatient acute care therapist in Grand Junction, Colorado, but looking forward to branching off into the world of academia, gradually. I will co-teach an intensive (1 month) Brain and Behavior course at the newly established Masters of OT program and Colorado Mesa University. I also look forward to expanding my reach in the international occupational therapy community and plan to participate as a mentor/guest lecturer with the Rwanda OT association this fall. I am seeking opportunities to become more involved in international service and academic pursuits at the intersection of social justice and occupational therapy.
