Dear MGH Institute Community:
As I wind down this chapter in my life, I think about all that I have here at the MGH Institute – and all that I’ve been part of – and it reaffirms just how lucky I have been.
Thanksgiving is a time many of us take stock of our lives of what we’re thankful for, and like many of you, I’m thankful for my health, family, and friends. But as I look back over the past eight years, I’m so incredibly grateful for the opportunity here at the MGH Institute.
When I left my Dean of Nursing position at Penn State eight years ago, I knew the opportunity to lead at the nexus of healthcare and higher education would be something special, and that working within a major academic medical center would be a unique opportunity not to be passed up. What I didn’t realize was just how special a place the IHP would be.
The energy and enthusiasm for educating the next generation of healthcare leaders is infectious, as is the commitment for developing new programs, pathways, and partnerships. We are enjoying the success we have today with more academic offerings than ever, more students than ever, strengthened ties with Mass General Brigham, and financial stability.
I’m so thankful for this period in my life, for the relationships built, for the passion each of you bring every day, for your talent and commitment and, for what we have been able to accomplish together. My list is long, and it includes:
- The congeniality and compassion we hold for one another
- The grace we’ve leaned on during the tough times, and desire to celebrate during the good times
- The Board of Trustees, who have always been there with support, words of wisdom, and encouragement
- Our donors, whose generosity have made centers and student scholarships possible
- Our service to community, powered by civic-minded faculty, staff, and students
- The entrepreneurial spirit that has enabled us to leverage technology into opportunity
- Our 11,000 alumni who are making an impact every day in hospitals, clinical sites, and schools all over the country
You are all truly the gift that keeps on giving, and I thank you for that.
As we reflect on our gifts, let’s keep in mind those who are experiencing stress, hopelessness, and loneliness this time of year, and let’s remember the Native Americans – the people responsible for this holiday with their kindness to English settlers – who have experienced centuries of marginalization, poor health, and economic hardship.
I hope you enjoy some R&R with friends and family over the break. When you get back, join us for the following holiday events:
- Holiday Concert: December 11th, 3:30 PM in Building 39 (2nd Floor)
- Faculty/Staff Holiday Party: December 11th, 5:00-8:00 PM in 1 CW
(Raffle benefitting Student Emergency Fund and Community Pantry)
Happy Thanksgiving. I wish you peace,
Paula
