Dear IHP Community:

On this day 106 years ago, the Great War World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. But the cost was steep four brutal years of fighting left more than eight million soldiers dead. When the war officially concluded in 1918, it was called Armistice Day, but in 1954, it was renamed Veterans Day to include all veterans in all wars.

And here we are today, with the democracy and security of our country intact, thanks to the brave individuals who went to war to protect the ideals we cherish most.

Today is a time to reflect on these patriots and think about what they risked and what they gave up.

IHP students, faculty, staff, and alumni are among the millions of Americans who have volunteered as members of the United States Uniformed Services. Today, I want to thank them for their role in protecting our democracy, and I want to recognize their courage, service, and sacrifice. It’s men and women like these who ensure the freedoms we should never take for granted.

While some veterans are leading normal lives after having finished their tours of duty, the scars of war have left others impaired physically, psychologically, or both. As a healthcare community, we need to always keep these veterans in mind and work to get them the help they need.

There are two ways you can mark Veterans Day:

  • Reflect on where our country would be without our veterans
  • If you see a veteran, say “Thank you for your service.” They have earned that recognition, and so much more.

With admiration and thanks to our IHP veterans,
Paula
