Dear Members of the IHP Community,

This weekend, we watched in horror the news about the killing of two students and wounding of several others at Brown University. This tragedy is reminiscent of the many other school shootings that have been happening in our country, an assault on the very institutions that are designed to expand our thinking, encourage open dialogue, and build civility in our communities. Our thoughts are with the Brown University community and the families who are touched by this horrific incident.

At this very important time of the year, when so many are exercising their religious freedom, the weekend’s violence may be difficult for some members of our community. Please know that there are many opportunities for assistance at the IHP including your colleagues and friends. I encourage you to support each other and use the resources if you need help. They include:

Student Assistance Program (SAP)

The SAP provides confidential consultation, short-term counseling, and referral services for students experiencing personal, emotional, or academic concerns.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Faculty and staff may access confidential counseling and support services through the Partners Employee Assistance Program.

Students, faculty, and staff may also call 866-724-4327 to access SAP or EAP services and learn more about available support.

I also want to remind you of the many safety services we have. As you know, we work closely with MGH Police and Security, but you can also play a role in keeping our campus safe. If you see something that is a concern, report it to one of the many MGH security personnel on campus. One can usually be found in the lobby of Shouse and another in the lobby of 2CW. A reminder that access to all of our buildings is restricted, so don’t allow strangers without a badge to enter after you. The following are key safety resources to be aware of; add the phone numbers into your phone now so you have them if needed:

MGH Police and Security (24/7 Coverage): 617-726-5400

  • Use this number for any campus-related emergencies rather than calling 911.
  • Security Escort Services: Security escorts are available for students, faculty, and staff traveling on or near campus, particularly after dark.

Emergency Preparedness and Notifications

The Institute maintains emergency response protocols, safety alerts, and preparedness procedures for classrooms, labs, and campus spaces. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date in ionline.mghihp.edu.

Additional information about campus safety and security services can be found in this link.

Again, our hearts go out to the members of Brown University in the wake of this tragedy.

Warmly,
Paula
