Dear IHP community,
As I see all the political and civil strife in our country and especially on our college campuses, we cannot help but be impacted by the news that we all see and read each day, as polarizing issues play out in peaceful protests and in sometimes not so peaceful ways. Campus operations near and far have not only seen disruptions, but students and employees who report feeling unsafe in their college communities. During these very challenging times for members of our own community, the IHP leadership and I stand with you. We will continue to support you as you engage with an open mind in critical dialogue and thoughtful debate, always affording dignity and respect to those with whom you may disagree.
Over these last six months, I am proud that we have provided spaces to have these difficult conversations utilizing freedom of thought and open dialogue; the IHP will continue to do this in support of our diverse community. In addition, the Employee Assistance Program and the Student Assistance Program are accessible to anyone who is struggling and would like to speak with a counselor or learn about available resources.
I want to thank our JEDI office for providing the spaces needed for people to share their thoughts and engage in constructive dialogue. Rising above all the noise about the commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion on many other college campuses, the IHP is committed to our JEDI mission and will continue to support its work with students, faculty, and staff. Our JEDI work enables our community members to be more reflective and insightful about their own beliefs and actions. The JEDI office’s work to support faculty in the design and enhancement of courses and academic curricula helps our students to be inspired learners and more equitable and anti-oppressive practitioners.
Earlier this week, Provost Bushardt shared a thoughtful and updated IHP statement on academic freedom and free speech, which was revised in collaboration with our faculty. As an academic institution, we are deeply committed to these principles in both the classroom and in our communication with each other. As a community, I am so proud that we have had thoughtful and engaged dialogue on these difficult issues and continue to work as colleagues in the achievement of our mission. All faculty, staff, and students have the right to teach, learn, and work in an environment that is safe and respectful of individual differences.
As we approach one of the best times in our academic calendar, Commencement, I want to thank you all for your many contributions to our campus and the colleagueship we share. I continue to be proud of our campus community and the incredible students we educate.
With warm regards for a peaceful summer,
Paula
