Some IHP students took a break from studying this week for a worthy cause – making Valentines Day special for others. Yesterday in Shouse 315, more than 50 bags full of Valentines Day cards, candy, lotions, and other personal care items were created by KinsIHP, a student group focusing on building community for LGBTQIA+ students at the MGH Institute. The bags will be donated to two local LGBTQIA+ Youth non-profit organizations: BAGLY and OUT WestMetro.
Founded in 2005, KinsIHP was inactive for the last couple of years but became active again in August of 2023. The mission of KinsIHP is to offer a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies at the institute. The group holds social events and educational series to increase awareness of health and other topics related to the community.
“The Valentine's Day event is helping us build our connections with the local queer community,” said KinsIHP president Ashlyn Harris. “We hope to continue to foster this relationship and many others. It means a lot that we are able to provide support to youth and adolescents in the area while getting to know different people across the IHP as well.”
The club encourages participation from students across all academic programs at the IHP. Anyone interested in learning more about the club can email Harris at: aharris1 [at] mghihp.edu (aharris1[at]mghihp[dot]edu)
