School of Nursing Assistant Professor Kathy Hall and Instructor Meaghan Rudolph presented on gun violence prevention at the recent National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) conference in Denver, Colorado.
With a presentation titled, “Incorporating Gun Violence Prevention Education into Nurse Practitioner Curriculum,” the duo discussed the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating gun violence prevention education into nurse practitioner curricula.
Rudolph, a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Hall, a nurse director at Massachusetts General Hospital, have published extensively on the topic and say it’s time to normalize nurses asking questions about guns and safe gun storage.
During the presentation, Hall and Rudolph spoke about the need for gun violence prevention content to be incorporated into advanced practice nursing curriculum to ensure that graduates are equipped with the knowledge to provide such counseling. Other topics were covered as well.
“We have been pleasantly surprised with how well this topic has been received as we have been engaging with nurse educators from across the country at these conferences,” said Rudolph.
Added Hall: “It’s encouraging to hear faculty from other programs have interest in this and are eager to find ways to add this important content into their teaching.”
