MGH Institute of Health Professions President Paula Milone-Nuzzo has been named to the Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts list by The Women’s Edge and its partner, The Boston Globe. The announcement came this morning at the Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in MA breakfast at the Marriott Copley Hotel in Boston.

“I think it’s a great recognition for the IHP to be among the Top 100 Businesses in the Commonwealth led by a woman,” said Dr. Milone-Nuzzo. “We have a great organization, we have lots of connections with our parent organizations, Massachusetts General Hospital and Mass General Brigham, and it’s a school where all of our employees can realize their full potential.”

Factors that went into the evaluation included revenue, operating budget, governing board makeup, innovative projects, and workplace and management diversity. One-third of the IHP’s upper management is female, while 44% of its Board of Trustees are women as is 80% of its workforce. On the diversity side, 15% of its workforce and 12% of the Trustees are made up of women of color.

The Institute, the only degree-granting affiliate of Mass General Brigham, New England’s largest healthcare provider, had an operating budget of just over $70 million this past fiscal year.

This is the first time an IHP president has been named to this list and it comes just after the five-year anniversary of Milone-Nuzzo’s presidency. During her time leading the Boston health sciences graduate school, the Institute has added a new school (School of Healthcare Leadership), launched nine new degree programs, and has seen a 42% improvement in its endowment, and a 62% rise in total net assets.

“The placement in the Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts list continues the IHP’s upward trajectory we’ve seen ever since Paula became president in August of 2017,” said Trustee Jim Canfield. “We’re lucky to have her at the helm and we look forward to celebrating more accomplishments like this in the future.”

“The Institute has always had solid academic programs that prepared well-educated health care practitioners,” said Milone-Nuzzo. “Our graduates are prepared as leaders that work to advance improvements in health care delivery through interprofessional practice.  In addition, in the last 10 years, we have built out our research portfolio and are contributing to improved patient care through scientific discovery. We have been thoughtful and strategic about how the IHP can impact health care delivery and add to the workforce of the Mass General Brigham system.

Milone-Nuzzo joins four other MGB leaders on the list: Anne Klibanski, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mass General Brigham; Denise Schepici, President and Chief Executive Officer of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital; Lynn A. Stofer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mass General Brigham Community Physicians; and Marcela G. del Carmen, President of Massachusetts General Physicians Organization and Executive Vice President of Mass General Brigham.

The Women’s Edge – formerly known as The Commonwealth Institute – is a Boston-based nonprofit organization devoted to advancing women in leadership positions. This is the 22nd year it has released its Top 100 list, which was created through a nomination process and includes for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

The full list will be in print in this Sunday’s Boston Globe Magazine’s Women & Power issue.
