Over the years, many faculty have reached out to Dr. Callie Watkins Liu, the director of community excellence, education, and programs, when they have questions about how to advance health equity in their curriculum and pedagogy, but there hasn’t been centralized a place for faculty to access guidance and resources. Until now.
The newly launched Health Equity and Community Excellence (HECE) Education Hub gives faculty a centralized place to access tools, resources, and best practices for integrating health equity into teaching and learning. The HECE Education Hub is a collaboration between the SOTL Center and the Mission Values and Community Excellence (MVCE) Office and is chaired by Dr. Watkins Liu. It was launched as a hub off the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Center as part of the IHP strategic planning process last year.
“Integrating HECE values into the curriculum was hard because the resources were dispersed and faculty didn’t know what existed,” said Watkins Liu. “The HECE Education Hub gives them a single location to access information that can be used during the strategic planning process on fostering belonging in the didactic and clinical learning process.”
Attendees at the launch celebration on March 5 were able to review the available resources and give feedback, an aspect of the Hub that Watkins Liu says will continue.
“The HECE Hub is a living resource where we can add articles or presentations as they arise,” explained Watkins Liu. “It provides a foundation that will allow us to spend time exploring more questions and topics that can then also be added to the Hub.”
