Dr. Shuhan He pursuing partnerships through presentations, proof points, and opportunity
By day, Dr. Shuhan He is an emergency physician at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Program Director of the Master of Science in Healthcare Data Analytics (MSDA) program at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. But over the past several months, Dr. He has added to his duties by working extensively with leading academic institutions to advance the MGH Institute’s reputation as a global authority in health data analytics.
Fostering International Synergies
Earlier this year, Dr. He was invited to speak at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, the country’s top-ranked university. Delivering grand rounds on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data analytics in healthcare, He highlighted how the Institute’s data analytics initiatives could align with the University’s growing interest in digital health.
“The time is now to build strong collaborations in data analytics and AI,” said He. “Our work at the IHP is creating new ways to manage patient wait times, identify substance use trends, and apply cutting-edge research to real-world healthcare needs.”
During his visit, He conferred with faculty and administrators eager to collaborate on research, guest lectures, and potential educational exchanges—laying groundwork that may lead to deeper partnerships in the future.
Broadening Reach with Academic Partners
Not long after returning from Thailand, He served as a keynote speaker at the Bay Area Medical Informatics Society (BAMIS) Symposium 2025 in San Francisco. His talk focused on the emerging field of “human phenotyping” and how AI can be trained to interpret patient cues just as a skilled physician would.
“Imagine if we could teach AI to interpret visual cues as accurately as an experienced clinician,” he explains. “That would open the door to more effective triage and diagnosis, revolutionizing patient care.”
Next month, He is scheduled to share insights on health data analytics with faculty and students at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, and later this spring, he will speak in Washington DC at an American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Digital Health Innovation Festival event. These engagements underscore the IHP’s role as a rising leader in training the next generation of health data specialists.
Driving Research and Innovation at the IHP
Beyond his speaking engagements, Dr. He continues to propel research initiatives at the Institute—particularly in the realm of AI, computer vision, and digital health. He is collaborating with fellow researchers on grant-funded projects that explore advanced data analytics in clinical contexts.
Another highlight on the horizon is an upcoming Healthier Innovation Conference in June, hosted by the MSDA program. The conference will welcome abstracts from innovators worldwide, offering a platform to share and celebrate new research and breakthroughs in health data analytics.
“We’re excited to showcase the scholarship happening at the IHP,” He notes. “This conference will bring together diverse voices in healthcare, data science, and technology—further strengthening our efforts in improving patient outcomes through analytics-driven innovation.”
