The MGH Institute of Health Professions held its first-ever Lavender Celebration this spring, honoring graduating LGBTQ+ students and marking a new campus tradition.
The student-led event brought together graduates, faculty, staff, and supporters for a ceremony centered on community, reflection, and pride. Speech-language pathology student Helen Cohen called it “a huge success,” adding that it was “a privilege to come together and make a little history” at the Institute.
Lavender Celebrations, held at colleges and universities nationwide, recognize LGBTQ+ graduates and create space to celebrate identity, resilience, and community. At the Institute, graduates received lavender cords, symbols of LGBTQ+ pride, and took part in a healthcare-inspired pinning moment, pledging to provide inclusive, respectful care for all patients.
The event also highlighted the importance of visibility in today’s climate, particularly within healthcare. “We are not just graduates, we are proud LGBTQ+ graduates,” Cohen said.
Organizers hope the celebration will continue as an annual tradition, uplifting future cohorts and reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to inclusive, compassionate care.
