The four newest board members of the Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners (MCNP) have one important thing in common: they are all alumni of the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Although they didn’t overlap during their studies, they are now uniting as leaders to advance the advocacy and education of nurse practitioners (NPs) around the state of Massachusetts.

Christopher Reeves (MS-NU ’15) began his tenure as President of the MCNP last month and will serve with the Director of DEI Mariyan Montaque (MS-NU '15, DNP ’16), Region III Director Elena Freydin (MS-NU ’02, DNP ’09), and Director at Large Kristine Pereira-View (MS-NU ’05). While Reeves has served on the board since 2023, the other three are new as of March.

“The four of us are incumbents and we had an orientation at the first meeting, where we all came together. We got to talking and we realized we had all attended the MGH Institute,” Pereira-View explained.

Although a coincidence, it is no surprise these accomplished directors all attended the Institute.

“I remember my time as a student here being very empowering, and feeling like the focus was very much on giving us the skills to be leaders. The Institute is all about people who are doing more and being leaders in the field. I think that that's really what drives the alumni to join and do more,” said Pereira-View.

Dedicated to advancing the NP profession, the MCNP is a non-profit professional membership organization for Massachusetts nurse practitioners. Founded in 1992, it provides a platform for professional support and regulatory guidance. By fostering excellence in education and maintaining a strong presence in the state legislature, MCNP ensures that NPs have adequate resources and representation. They also host educational and community events around the state for members, including the annual New England Regional Nurse Practitioner Conference which took place in May.

The four newcomers are all bringing their unique perspectives to the board, shaped by their educational backgrounds and professional work experiences.

Reeves is bringing a dedicated focus on NP advocacy and health policy to his new role. After graduating from the Institute and completing a Trauma Surgery and Critical Care residency at George Washington University Hospital, he has practiced as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP since 2016. He currently serves as a Nursing Professional Development Specialist at Boston Children’s Hospital while maintaining a clinical presence in the adult Neuro ICU at Mass General Hospital. Having risen through the MCNP leadership ranks since 2023, Reeves is also finalizing his PhD in Nursing Science at UMass Boston, where he specializes in the systemic issues and legislative advocacy vital to the NP profession.

Montaque, the new MCNP Director of DEI, has been practicing as a registered nurse since 2011. In 2016, she earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), where her research focused on pediatric diabetes management. Her experience spans health equity and clinical leadership work, and she is deeply committed to serving vulnerable populations and advancing advocacy work. She has also served as a term lecturer for the Institute since 2021.

As new Region III Director, Freydin will serve the Merrimack Valley and North Shore areas. She also completed two programs at MGH Institute; first, she received her Master of Science in Nursing as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in 2002, before earning her DNP in 2009. She is currently the Chief Compliance Officer at Lynn Community Health Center in Lynn, Massachusetts, and has been at the organization since 2017. She also received her MBA from UMass Amherst in 2025, where she specifically focused on healthcare management.

Pereira-View brings a unique behavioral health lens to her new role as Director at Large. After graduating with an MS in Pediatric Nursing from the Institute, she worked at Longwood Pediatrics and Boston Children’s Hospital, each for over a decade. She is still at Boston Children’s, where she is currently Director of Advanced Practice Nursing for Psychiatry, Psychiatry Medicine and Emergency Services. She also practices clinically managing medical care for patients on the inpatient psych unit.

The work of Reeves, Montaque, Freydin, and Pereira-View will allow them to bring their own interests to the board and their advocacy work. Every student’s experience at the MGH Institute is different, but thanks to their educational backgrounds, these directors share a common passion for advocacy and excellence.  [ML5.1]
