MGH Institute graduates of the Physician Assistant Studies program returned to share advice with current students to help prepare them for their next steps after graduation in October.
Mimoza Shehu, a faculty member and MPAS graduate, guided the panel with thoughtful questions that drew on alumni experiences, helping students envision the path from graduation to their first roles as PAs. The panelists emphasized the value of both technical preparation and authenticity during interviews. Speakers encouraged students to highlight unique clinical scenarios, list rotations and preceptors, and tailor CVs to specific jobs. They also noted that while special skills — such as language proficiency or AI training — are valuable, they are not essential if candidates are fully trained. Teamwork, initiative, and a willingness to learn were cited as key qualities for thriving in collaborative healthcare environments.
For many alumni, this second annnual event was as meaningful for them as it was for students.
“It was great to give some insight to the future grads on work life, the interview process, and recognizing that everything will work out in the end, even in a stressful time,” said Michael Techiera, MPAS ’23. “The staff, as always, are excellent and I’m thankful they invited me to impart even a small bit of wisdom to everyone.”
Michael Mendes, MPAS ’24, who helped launch the initiative last year as a student, returned as an alumni panelist.
“I’m grateful the cohort and faculty decided this event was a tradition worth continuing, and I’m humbled to be invited back,” said Mendes. “Helping students navigate this challenging time is both exciting and rewarding, particularly as a new graduate. The IHP has an incredible ecosystem of alumni across various specialties and healthcare systems to offer a diverse perspective.”
According to Director of Alumni Relations Katie Mulcahy, the event also serves a larger purpose: “This seminar was a meaningful opportunity for alumni to share their expertise, reconnect with the institution, and build new relationships with both students and one another. Events like this highlight the strength of our alumni network, which plays a vital role in supporting graduates at every stage of their professional journey.”
