MGH Institute students, staff, and faculty members contributed 558 pounds of clothing, shoes, and linen to a clothing drive from February 3-7 to support the IHP Community Pantry. These items will either be donated to those in need or repurposed into rags and insulation. For each pound of textiles collected, the Institute earned a $0.10 rebate, totaling $55.80.

Organized by Tyler Leary as a part of her position as sustainability coordinator, and in partnership with Helpsy which collected the clothing and processed it.

“I am very happy with how much we collected this year,” said Leary. “Textiles such as clothing, towels, and other fabrics are often trashed when they could instead be reused or recycled for a new purpose. Activities like these help promote individual actions that benefit the environment by reducing water and energy usage from the production of new items and encourage more mindful habits.”

This was the second year holding a clothing drive. There will be more environmentally conscious events coming up in April for Earth Month, including a free bike tune-up for students, and an eye-glass recycling program.
