Members of the military have been on the minds of MGH Institute students recently. With Veterans Day coming up on Monday, members of the military will be receiving the thanks of students who took part in two projects.
During the month of October, the Student Government Association collected personal items for service members who are deployed overseas. The deployment boxes in Shouse, 2CW, and the Bellack Library were brimming with things like toothbrushes, toothpaste and food, according to SGA President MacKensie Looze, CSD ’25.
“There were substantial donations,” said Looze. “At least one box was completely filled and we will be shipping these essential items to those on active duty.”
That won’t be the only thing being sent. On November 4, students took part in a letter-writing event to thank veterans for their service. The letters will be dropped off at the VA on Veterans Day.
The ideas came from SGA Secretary, Kaitlin Holcroft, DPT ’26, who joined with Looze, and Noa Gamliel, an OT student who serves as the SGA treasurer, and DPT student, Caitlyn Cook, the SGA vice president, to execute the events.
“I come from a military family,” said Holcroft. "My dad was in the Army for 30 years and is now retired so when we were thinking about events, I thought it would be nice to show our support for our Veterans and suggested we do a letter writing event for Veterans Day to show them how much the people really do care and value their service.”
There was also a Mass General Brigham-wide event on November 6. MGB’s Annuals Veterans Day Forum featured two panel discussions with employees and community members who are developing innovative approaches to support military members, veterans, and families in the fields of research, education, and workforce development.
