Yesterday, the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Department of Nursing hosted a breakfast event to celebrate the exciting launch of the MGH Institute of Health Professions School of Nursing (IHP SON) clinical placements in MGH's renowned intensive care and intermediate care units, as well as those of its affiliates. This momentous occasion was graced by MGH leadership, including Senior Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nurse Dr. Debbie Burke, along with the IHP SON Interim Dean and Director of Community Engagement, Dr. Patricia Reidy. JJoining them were MGH nursing directors, clinical instructors, IHP faculty, and members of the clinical education teams.
In response to the increasing complexity and acuity of patients nationwide, the MGH IHP SON has revised its prelicensure curriculum to include a vital acute care component. As part of this innovative curriculum, students will now embark on a seven-week journey through the "Nursing Care of Adults with Complex Health Conditions" course, which integrates didactic learning, hands-on simulation, and immersive clinical experience. This Fall semester, thirty students have been placed in six critical care and intermediate care units at MGH, where they will be guided by experienced staff nurses who will serve as their clinical instructors.
“This represents a significant and energizing milestone in the robust academic-clinical partnership between MGH and the IHP School of Nursing,” said Reidy. “It’s paving the way for future collaborations that will continue to elevate patient care and nursing education.”
