Many people make banana bread to prevent their overripe bananas from going to waste. On Monday in 2CW, banana bread provided another service — raising money for physical therapy research.

Eight bakers donated banana bread for the PT Banana Bread Bakeoff and 40 people paid to taste the sweet treat, and in some cases, bring their favorite home.

"It's one of the most anticipated annual events by the entire department, as it gives students a great study break, and an opportunity for faculty and students to come together for a great cause,” said Abbey Kroll, DPT ’26, who serves as one of the Marquette Chairs at the MGH Institute.

The bakeoff raised $172 for the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research as part of the Marquette Challenge, where PT students from programs across the country select what type of fundraiser they want to do and compete against the other programs. The top fundraisers will be recognized at the 50th Annual American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in February.

While the Department of Physical Therapy at the MGH Institute has taken part for the past few years, the Marquette Challenge has raised more than $5 million since 1989 to fund grants, scholarships, and fellowships.

“Throughout the years, banana bread bake off has been a great way to bring some friendly competition within the cohorts and faculty, as well as being a great conversation starter,” said Marquette Chair Marissa Torres, DPT ’26. “And it tastes better when you know you’re contributing to a great charity such as the Marquette Challenge.”
