Dr. Sarah McKinnon, OT, OTD, BCPR, MPA, FAOTA, FNAP, interim chair of the Occupational Therapy Department at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, had the privilege of attending and presenting at the first-ever OT-Europe Congress in Krakow, Poland. This landmark event brought together occupational therapists from across Europe and around the world to share knowledge, expertise, and advancements in the profession.

As the first event of its kind, the OT-Europe Congress represents a significant milestone, encouraging international collaboration and innovation in the evolving field of occupational therapy. The OT-Europe Congress is a collaborative effort of three European OT associations: European Network of Occupational Therapy in Higher Education (ENOTHE), Council of Occupational Therapists for the European Countries (COTEC) and Research in Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science (ROTOS).

"Attending the first OT-Europe Congress in Krakow was an inspiring experience and showcased the value of global collaboration in occupational therapy,” said McKinnon.

Dr. McKinnon presented at the Congress alongside Dr. Kate Barlow, OT, OTD, of American International College. Their presentation focused on OT ECHO, an international online mentorship program designed to support occupational therapists, many of whom are the first OTs in their respective countries, with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Since its inception in 2019, OT ECHO has supported over 600 therapists from more than 40 countries. Utilizing an evidence-based telementoring platform, the monthly program has aimed to enhance clinical confidence among practitioners. The presentation shared qualitative and quantitative data that highlighted the efficacy of this platform in providing low-cost, accessible mentorship. The presentation also included contributions from EL-OTD alum, Dr. Kelsey Sullivan, and Dr. Yaijaira Castillo, who worked with McKinnon and Barlow on this project during their doctoral studies. Dr. McKinnon and Dr. Barlow look forward to expanding this important initiative and contributing to the global growth of occupational therapy.

“It was an honor to present alongside Dr. Kate Barlow on our OT ECHO mentorship program, which supports therapists in countries where OT is still emerging,” noted McKinnon. “This Congress reaffirmed the importance of international partnerships and motivates me to continue contributing to the profession globally."

The next OT-Europe Congress will be held in 2028. To learn more or register, visit OT ECHO.
