A screening of the film, Everybody’s Work – Healing What Hurts Us All, took place in 1CW on Monday. Co-hosted by the MGH Institute Nursing Club and the Office of Mission, Values and Community Excellence (previously named the JEDI Office), the screening was followed by a panel discussion on the themes in the film.
Sammy Freeman, a third-semester ABSN student and a School of Nursing Health Equity and Leadership (HEAL) Fellow explained when she introduced the film, it “shines a light on the invisible labor that often goes unrecognized in the healthcare system and beyond. It encourages us to reflect on our roles and responsibilities as caregivers, advocates, and agents of change.”
School of Nursing Instructor Cassandra Mombrun gave a keynote address before the film and then joined Assistant Professor Antonia Makosky, Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy Keshrie Naidoo, Assistant Professor Rachael Salguero, and Chief Equity Officer Kimberly Truong, on the panel after the film. The panelists shared their experiences and answered question from the audience before Nursing Club President Sierra Gage closed the event by sharing why the film and resulting discussion were important.
“Our profession, at its core, is about advocating for those who are vulnerable, marginalized, and underserved,” said Gage, who graduates this year from the Direct Entry Nursing program. “It’s about caring for the whole person — not just their physical needs, but their emotional, mental, and social well-being.
“We also must reflect on how each of us can improve interpersonal relationships with team members who come from backgrounds different from your own. It’s through these connections that we can cultivate trust, foster collaboration, and improve patient outcomes.”
