The Impact Practice Center was host to more than a dozen high school students this morning, who were learning about potential careers in the health professions. It’s part of the Health Careers Pathway Program between the MGH Institute of Health Professions and Charlestown High School. During five visits this summer to the IHP, students will be exposed to audiology, speech language pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, and simulation activities, among other introductions.

“During our conversation about health earlier this week , you could see many of the students knew about nurses and doctors but didn't really know about other career options,” said Laura Plummer, dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. “This is an opportunity to expose them to all the different types of careers that might be out there - ones that we have here at the IHP, and even some that we don't have here. They’ll know the different opportunities that exist.”

The students are English language learners who speak predominantly Spanish who are interested in the health professions and are part of a summer program. The partnership with Charlestown High School is yet another example of the MGH Institute collaborating with the Charlestown community partners.

“The mission of the IHP is to educate health care professionals to care for a diverse society” noted Plummer. “And this is one of our initiatives to help to live that mission.”
