The annual Cupcake War made a triumphant return to MGH Institute of Health Professions, filling the room with the enticing aroma of freshly based cupcakes and the buzz of friendly competition. With whisked-up creativity and a touch of sugar-fueled rivalry, bakers battled for the top spot while supporting a meaningful cause.
"We’ve been doing this for years," said Carla Donati, assistant dean of administration in the School of Nursing. "We’re always looking for new and exciting events to bring our staff and students together. This year, we chose the Student Emergency Fund because it directly supports students in need. It’s a sweet way to make a real difference."
"Every cupcake is adored, everyone is a winner, and it’s all for the Student Emergency Fund," declared one of the event organizers, Emily "M" Meyer, associate director of student accessibility & support Services.
After a COVID-induced hiatus, the competition was back with a fresh purpose — proceeds went directly to the Student Emergency Fund, offering financial relief to students facing unexpected challenges. This year, the event raised $105 for the fund, proving that a little sweetness can make a big difference.
"We’re realizing the financial impact students are really under," shared Katikie Appleberry Robinson, talent acquisition partner and one of the judges. "For example, we had a student who faced a fire over the holiday season and didn’t know where to turn. That’s what the Student Emergency Fund is for. It’s there for hardships, whether it’s related to school or not."
Armed with piping bags and secret ingredients, competitors pulled out all the stops, but one creation rose above the rest. Coconut Lemon Cupcakes with Guava Cream Cheese Frosting claimed the crown, dazzling judges with a tropical twist that transported taste buds to an island escape.
The winning baker’s masterpiece wasn’t just born from a mixing bowl—it was the result of an unexpected collaboration between Megan Wilcox’s creativity and artificial intelligence.
"I had leftover guava paste from a tropical-themed party and wasn’t sure how to use it," shared Wilcox, assistant director of enrollment marketing. "I turned to ChatGPT for inspiration, and it suggested pairing it with cream cheese frosting. I decided to give it a try, and the result was nothing short of magic."
