From yarn to markers, creativity is flowing among MGH Institute staff and faculty members thanks to the Staff Crafting Club. The gathering, which took place Tuesday in the lobby of Shouse, brought together employees from all departments to engage in calming and artistic hobbies.
Associate Director of Student Accessibility & Support Services and founder of the club, Emily Meyer, started the bi-monthly craft meetings after noticing a need for some time to relax and connect with other co-workers.
"I started the Staff Crafting Club to help folks quite literally unwind,” said Meyer. “I’d seen firsthand how much joy and connection can come from simply making things together. The hands-on stations at a recent Staff Forum confirmed that on a larger scale, people are eager for creative outlets but don’t always have the space.”
At each meeting, employees bring in their current or favorite craft. Some of the most common crafts among the group include fiber arts and paper crafts.
“The club offers a chance to step away from screens, take a break from the news, and stitch together new connections across departments,” noted Meyer during Tuesday’s meeting. “It’s one small way we’re building community and bridging the siloes that often exist in higher education."
