It was a day for the students to be the teachers.
During “Science Week” earlier this month at the Tenacre Country Day School in Wellesley, MGH Institute audiology students educated children on the anatomy and physiology of the ear as well as hearing loss.
Audiology Program Director, Andrea Pittman, along with second year students Morgan Cassford, Hannah Colan and Callaway Sheedy, led Tenacre students through hands-on stations that included listening to hearing aids, using remote microphones, learning about the two major characteristics of sound (frequency and amplitude) with an audiogram matching game, and playing with tuning forks.
This was the Institute’s second visit to the school; last spring, Pittman took a doctoral student to speak to the children.
“We had so much fun,” she recalls. “When we were invited back this year, we jumped at the chance. But this time I took more students with me, and we were able to do a lot more. It was really fun.”
Beyond the joy of teaching, the visit offered invaluable experience for the IHP students, who have spent the past year developing educational materials for children with hearing loss.
“It was great to see them work so easily with the children and communicate complex information in a way the children could understand” shared Pittman. “This collaboration not only enriched the elementary students’ understanding of hearing, but also gave the IHP students critical hands-on experience.”
