As a faculty development resource, the MGH Institute Learning Experience Designers foster a culture of excellence and innovation in teaching. They collaborate with Institute faculty to improve the student learning experience through the application of evidence-based practices. They provide faculty support through a variety of methods including confidential one-on-one consultations, workshops, events, and online resources.

The Learning Experience Designers provide confidential one-on-one consulting to faculty on a range of teaching challenges. Using learning theory and research based practices, they help instructors refine their teaching skills, adopt new practices, and enhance student learning.

Common topics for consultation include:

  • Improving teaching effectiveness and efficiency
  • Developing new courses and programs
  • Re-designing and enhancing existing courses
  • Aligning learning goals with teaching and learning activities
  • Navigating challenging classroom situations
  • Implementing active learning strategies
  • Adopting new teaching and learning technologies

A consultation can be a single brief conversation, or a series of ongoing meetings over the course of a project. Contact the Learning Experience Designers to learn more and schedule a consultation.

Confidentiality Policy

MGH Institute faculty voluntarily solicit Learning Experience Design services in order to enhance their teaching and improve student learning. Mindful of establishing trust in a voluntary service, the Learning Experience Designers maintain the confidentiality of faculty consultations including the identity of faculty, topics of discussion, and types of services provided.

Workshops and events organized by the Learning Experience Designers provide development opportunities for faculty to explore teaching and learning topics. Workshops provide hands-on experience in an interdisciplinary environment where faculty can discover a variety of approaches to what is being discussed. Events are informal meetings bringing together faculty interested in a specific pedagogical approach (e.g., active learning), factors influencing student learning, viewing a live webinar, or a book group. Workshops and events are interactive and typically 60-minutes in length. In addition to our semester workshops schedule, the Learning Experience Designers can provide customized workshops for department or programs.

Reoccurring events sponsored by our team:

Faculty Book Group

Each semester the Learning Experience Designers organize a faculty reading group to work through titles such as "How Learning Works: Seven Research Principles for Smart Teaching" and "Small Teaching Online.” Books are provided. Limited seating available.

Faculty Lunch Bites

Faculty Lunch Bites are informal gatherings held by the Learning Experience Designers during the semester to discuss topics related to teaching and learning. A short reading is distributed before the date, and faculty are welcome to bring their lunches.

Faculty Development Days

Research and Scholarship Day is in January and focuses on the research and scholarship of our faculty. The second event is in the spring and typically focuses on teaching and learning.

The Learning Experience Designers created and maintain the Teaching Section of Faculty Compass where faculty will find resources related to preparing for a course, teaching a course, assessing student learning, and evaluating your teaching.
