Benefits of Being a Preceptor
In addition to the intangible benefits of giving back, there are also some more tangible benefits involved when you precept for MGH Institute of Health Professions.
Tuition Vouchers
Vouchers can be used to pay for courses (up to 12 credits) at MGH Institute of Health Professions. Depending on the course, this can equal a savings of over $14,000 in after-tax income. They can be redeemed for courses in our Nursing academic programs, as well as other post-professional course offerings [1]. Learn how to redeem vouchers [2].
For questions Nursing Preceptors have regarding vouchers, please contact Linda Henry [3].
Voucher Issuance Policy
MGH Institute of Health Professions (The Institute) issues tuition vouchers to recognize those health care professionals who serve as clinical preceptors or practicum/fieldwork supervisors for the Institute. The voucher is issued to the preceptor’s Agency or Institution, not to the individual; the clinical preceptor/practicum supervisor may be given priority in using the voucher for professional development.
The Agency or Institution of a clinical preceptor or practicum/fieldwork supervisor who supervises a student (or students) for 60 hours or more per semester will be awarded three tuition vouchers worth one credit each. Students must be registered into a clinical placement section for vouchers to be issued. The Institute’s Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education for the respective program may identify extenuating circumstances in which a voucher override is necessary.
Vouchers for the fall semester will be issued no later than January 31st. Vouchers for the spring semester will be issued no later than May 31st. Vouchers for the summer semester will be issued no later than September 30th. Exceptions to these deadlines include academic programs whose semesters fall outside these parameters. In this case, vouchers must be issued by the last day of the month following the close of that program’s semester.
Advanced Practice Nursing Recertification Hours
We provide preceptors with 104 hours of credit per semester to be used toward their ANCC renewal requirement. Once the semester ends, the Office of Clinical Education emails each clinician who precepted that semester a "Certification of Hours for the Semester," certifying 104 credits earned.
Library Access
Our preceptors receive full access to our library of Point-of-Care resources like: Up to Date, DynaMed, National Guideline Clearing House, OvidSP, PubMed@MGH [4], CINAHL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Medline Complete, Clinical Key, and many more.
