Throughout the world, health professionals are at the forefront of both formal and informal health care systems, providing care to individuals in underserved areas, contributing to health capacity and infrastructure, and fostering health equity.  Broad-based education in global health principles is an important foundation that is essential in order to plan and deliver sound innovative interventions that have the ability to impact both individuals and populations.  

As a health professions graduate school, we are committed to educating tomorrows health care leaders as global citizens that are committed to addressing the health needs and human rights of populations around the world. Our unique online model of global interprofessional education seeks to promote health equity while focusing on cutting edge innovations that may contribute to improvements in health care delivery worldwide.  Our program includes an in-country practicum that focuses on population health initiatives.

Global Health Equity and Innovations: Online Certificate of Completion Curriculum

Course of Study – 10 credits

NH-842 Introduction to Global Health

Credits: 3. Prerequisites: Advanced Practice Status.

This course will address the issues affecting the health of individuals, communities, and populations globally. Issues in international health including public health, environmental health, emerging infectious diseases, and chronic illness will be explored. The historic roots of international health, societal and cultural issues and major contemporary issues will be explored.

NH-826 Health of Vulnerable Populations: Immigrants, Refugees, & Native Americans

Credits: 3. Prerequisites: None.  ​Pass/Fail option available. 

Immigrants, refugees, and Native Americans bring unique experiences with profound implications for their health care experience. To provide optimal care, providers must be sensitive and knowledgeable of expectations and practices unique to these populations. This course explores cultural and health care patterns and practices as well as previous experiences relevant to immigrants, refugees, and Native Americans. The course will also discuss available resources, as well as potential challenges confronted by those providing health care.

NH-847 Program Planning & Evaluation: Global Health

Credits: 2. Prerequisites: NH-842, NH-826 (can be waived by instructor).

Can also be taken simultaneously with or before NH-862 (Global Health Practicum). Building on concepts that were covered in Introduction to Global Health, this course will introduce program planning for the global context. Assignments will focus on practical approaches for the identification, design, planning, monitoring, and evaluation of global health interventions from a health equity perspective.  Students will develop innovative solutions applicable to the local context.  Using an interprofessional, team based perspective, students will apply evidence based evaluation methods.

NH-862 Global Health Practicum

Credits: 2. Prerequisites: NH-842, NH-826.

The Global Health Practicum will offer the student the opportunity to synthesize and apply the concepts that were covered in the prerequisite courses, especially Program Planning and Evaluation of Global Health Initiatives. The practicum will occur in a venue inside or outside the US, but preferably in a resource limited, culturally diverse setting. Students will focus on challenges and potential innovations, applicable to their assigned setting, within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Yes, all of the courses are taught online and designed for those who work full-time. However, the practicum is conducted in-person in an international or applicable domestic setting.

How many credits is the program and how long does it typically take to complete?
 
The program consists of a 10-credit curriculum that can be completed in 9-12 months.
Do I need to formally apply to be accepted to the program?
 
No application is necessary; you simply register for courses [9] and complete your study based on your schedule. Registration for any given term is outlined in our official academic calendars [10].
Is this certificate for nurses only, or is it open to all health care professionals?

It is meant to be an Interprofessional certificate and can be completed by students of all health professions.

Am I required to have a bachelor's degree in order to register for classes for the certificate?

Yes, you must have received a bachelor's degree prior to enrolling in classes for this certificate. The courses are classified as graduate level courses.

Can I take each course individually and when available, or must I take all of the courses in sequence?

Courses can be taken individually when available (and out of sequence), but it is RECOMMENDED that NH-842 Introduction to Global Health be taken BEFORE NH-847 Program Planning & Evaluation: Global Health and NH-862 Global Health Practicum.
