President's Perspective: The 2021-2022 Academic Year in Review [7]

President Paula Milone-Nuzzo takes a look back at the accomplishments and milestones that occurred at the MGH Institute during the 2021-2022 academic year. Those included creating a School of Healthcare Leadership, expanding several academic programs, increasing on-campus services for students, staff and faculty, incorporating JEDI principals and competencies into curricula, all while navigating the erratic pattern of COVID.

Driven. Diverse. Meet Our Students.

Ashley Victor

"In all areas of health care, it’s important that providers can relate to those they serve and reflect those communities. The IHP educates us to embrace our differences even in a field that’s not very diverse. I truly hope the number of Black speech-language pathologists keeps growing. Regardless of field or personal experience, everyone brings their own abilities and identities to the table. Here at the IHP, that’s really valued."

Ashley Victor, MS, Speech-Language Pathology '22

What types of clinical opportunities did you have?
I worked in the NICU at Massachusetts General Hospital supporting premature infants’ feeding and swallowing development, and also spent time in Boston Public Schools working with students who have autism and were non-speaking. This summer, I'll work with adults who have aphasia in the IHP's IMPACT Practice Center.

Tyler Sousa

“As a first-generation college student, I wasn’t sure what to expect of higher education much less an advanced degree. My cohort and faculty in the DPT program have served to challenge me throughout the curriculum and support me during my own personal growth and hurdles. As the clock ticks down on my time as a student here, I cannot think of a better group to continue my academic journey with as I transition to a professional working in the field of physical therapy.”

Tyler Sousa, DPT '20

Why Did you Choose The IHP?
I applied to the IHP for the reputation, but I chose to attend for the atmosphere. Never before have I been surrounded by a group of individuals who are so thoroughly committed to solidarity, inclusion, and overall betterment.

“The IHP has made the transition to online learning more seamless than I could have ever expected. The faculty, especially the OT department and OSAS, have shown incredible support and empathy throughout these ever-changing times. Not only in regard to academic and clinical work, but more importantly, faculty have shown concern and care for our mental and physical well-beings. I feel so lucky to be a part of the IHP community always, but especially during this time; I have nothing but respect, gratitude, and admiration for all the hard work our faculty, administration, and my fellow classmates have put in to continue preparing us to be the best future health care providers.”

Marcus Wheeler

"Growing up on a farm in rural Mississippi and eventually working as a law enforcement officer in Atlanta gave me a unique perspective on socioeconomic and health care disparities. The very roots of the PA profession are to close the gap, which affects so many people  in my community and family alike."

Alyx Vogle

“COVID-19 has been difficult for everyone in many diverse, yet similar ways. Our genetic counseling faculty has taken the time to reach out to each one of us and based on feedback began running a processing group. Knowing I have that time set out in my week to vent has saved my mental health during this time. I am so thankful for the genetic counseling leadership.”
