At a recent town hall, the question was asked how the Institute has been integrated into the system-wide work of Mass General Brigham during the pandemic. Since the beginning of the crisis, the Institute has been fortunate to have Mass General Brigham as a close partner at its side. Senior leaders at the Institute have benefited from daily system-wide conference calls to get the latest information about the pandemic and its impact on the Commonwealth. Personally, I am grateful for advice and counsel I have received regularly from MGH President Peter Slavin, Mass General Brigham (MGB) President and CEO Anne Klibanski, and MGB Chief Human Resources Officer Rose Sheehan.

On a daily basis, Associate Vice President Denis Stratford and Chief Communications Officer Paul Murphy have attended leadership meetings for the past ten weeks as Mass General Brigham planned and recalibrated based on the changing course of the pandemic.

Denis is a member of the MGB Emergency Preparedness Committee, composed of incident commanders from each organization. During March and April, the team met seven days a week, coordinating a system-wide response based on internal expertise, guidance from the CDC, and in coordination with the directives by Governor Baker and Mayor Walsh. The guidance, expertise, and procedures from this team informed key decisions and policy changes implemented at the Institute. These same resources are guiding the development of the Institute’s Return to Campus Plan.

The Emergency Preparedness group has recently formed a sub-committee focusing on education. Denis and Associate Provost Mary Knab are representing the Institute on this team. This committee will be integral to successful re-entry of our students into the clinical practice at Mass General Brigham entities.

Paul has been attending the Daily Communications Task Force meetings, with communication leads from each MGB entity. During these half-hour meetings the group discusses the top priorities raised at the Incident Command meetings, and the best way to message and share these priorities to all employees. The group also discusses ideas and concerns raised across the system and ways to effectively address these issues.

In addition to the work of Denis and Paul, our finance and human resource leaders have been working closely with their Mass General Brigham counterparts on COVID related budget issues and on additional resources for employees and students during this challenging time.

Mass General Brigham has proven itself to be a leader in the state and New England in dealing with the pandemic. While none of this has been easy for any of us, our bond with colleagues across Mass General Brigham has been integral to the Institute’s ability to successfully navigate these unchartered waters.
