Dr. Gavini is responsible for oversight of the Research Office, all lab operations, planning and budget issues, faculty support, and compliance with federal and MGB guidelines and policies.

Dr. Gavini joined the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2019 as Executive Director of Research and Professor in the School of Nursing. Before joining the MGH Institute, Dr. Gavini served as Chief of the NIH Office of Extramural Programs at the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR/NIH) where he oversaw the funding activities of NINR that occur outside of NIH, in research institutions across the country and internationally, and NHLBI/NIH Chair of Diversity Programs. He also served as a Health Scientist Administrator at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and worked as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF).

While working at the NSF and NIH, he advised hundreds of faculty members in various stages of their career development. He is keen on facilitating research collaborations and promoting diversity programs. He received NHLBI Leadership Award in recognition of extraordinary leadership in bringing partnerships/collaborations and the NHLBI Diversity Award in recognition of his leadership to ensure that the future biomedical research workforce is of the highest quality and reflects the nation’s diversity.

Dr. Gavini also held a professorship at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and served as Head of the Department of Biological Sciences at Mississippi State University. He has been a Principal Investigator for NSF, NIH, and USDA research grants. He received President’s Award for Collaborative Research and Creative Work at Bowling Green State University. His previous appointments also include at the University of California, Irvine, and University of Melbourne, Australia.


Research Interests

Health Disparities; Implementation Research to Address Health Disadvantage; Hypertension Treatment and Control; Obesity Disparities Research; Late-Stage (T4) Translation Research and Implementation Science; and Structural and Mechanistic Similarities in Biological Systems.
