MBTA Public Transportation Discount Program and Sign-up

IHP students can purchase discounted MBTA passes for the fall (September 1-December 31) and spring (January 1 – May 30) semesters only.

The Fall 2017 MBTA Student Discounted Pass sign-up period is now open. Please use the MGH Institute Discount MBTA Pass Form to request a pass.

Please send or drop off payment to the Office of Student and Alumni Services no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 7. Late forms and payments cannot be accepted.

Passes will function from Friday, September 1, until Sunday, December 31.

Discounted passes are not available for sale on a monthly basis via the IHP. Students who do not meet the deadline set by the MBTA for participating in the semester program should buy monthly passes directly from the MBTA.

Frequently Asked Questions About the MBTA Pass Program

Should I get an MBTA Monthly Pass?

We advise students to determine how often they intend to travel on the "T" before purchasing a monthly pass. Those who use the "T" only a few times a week may not need to purchase a pass. For example, students who will use the "T" fewer than 34 times during the semester, or 17 round trips, may actually save money by not purchasing a monthly pass.

For example, 33 trips on the MBTA at $2.25 each for four months - an average of 4 round trips per month - is $297.00; the LINK Pass costs $300.82 for unlimited use during the semester.

What forms of payment are accepted?

Only payments via check or money order are accepted, and should be made out to MGH IHP. Any payments received after the deadline will not be accepted, and will be returned.

Cash is not accepted.

Can I turn my order form in late?

The deadlines are set by the MBTA, and are very strict. Unfortunately, we are not able to process late orders.

How do I purchase a pass?

Where and when can I pick up my pass?

Once you receive an email alerting you that passes are available, you can pick up your MBTA pass at the Office of Student and Alumni Services, located on the second floor of Building 34, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. LINK Passes are given as Charlie Cards, so you only need to pick it up once. All other passes are distributed as monthly passes, so you will need to pick it up each month. Passes are typically available a few days before the start of each month.

What if I decide I don’t want my pass any longer or I want to change my pass?

The MBTA will not allow any refunds or exchanges.

What if I lose my pass?

For LINK passes, the MBTA has a tracking system in place, which means your card can be deactivated and replaced. If you lose your LINK Pass, please notify us, and we will contact the MBTA to have them send us a new Charlie Card with a LINK pass loaded on it. It can take up to two weeks for a replacement pass to be sent to us. Unfortunately, if you lose a different type of pass, we are NOT able to replace it, as the MBTA does not have a tracking system in place to replace monthly passes.
