A graduate school focused exclusively on the health professions

MGH Institute of Health Professions is an innovative graduate school with a mix of post-baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in genetic counseling, health professions education, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, rehabilitation sciences, and speech-language pathology. We also offer online prerequisites and continuing and professional development for lifelong learning. We prepare students for careers, all within the top 50 jobs for 2021 as ranked by US News & World Report. These jobs pay well, are challenging, provide career growth...and are in demand.

Joshua Corpuz, MS-NU ’22, co-authored a paper with Adjunct Professor Kathy Simmonds in nursing journal calling for nurse practitioners to get involved, take a stand, and advocate for the marginalized population most affected by the Supreme Court’s decision.

"One of the PhD program’s biggest draws for me is that most candidates are allied health professionals who have clinical practice backgrounds. It’s a unique opportunity to intensively discuss research practice with providers across the PT, OT, and SLP disciplines. I also love that the dissertation requirement is highly functional and based around publishing actual papers rather than producing one dissertation work alone."

What is your current research focused on?

My current clinical and research focus is on understanding and improving cognitive outcomes and quality of life for adults with brain tumors as well as for individuals who have undergone hemispherectomy for epilepsy.

The IHP educates us to embrace our differences even in a field that’s not very diverse. I truly hope the number of Black speech-language pathologists keeps growing. What types of clinical opportunities did you have?

I worked in the NICU at Massachusetts General Hospital supporting premature infants’ feeding and swallowing development, and also spent time in Boston Public Schools working with students who have autism and were non-speaking. This summer, I'll work with adults who have aphasia in the IHP's IMPACT Practice Center.

We cannot simply study individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities without making sure that they're included in each aspect of that research. We’ve seen many past failures in research come from not including the voices of the people that were being studied. They can help build our studies from the ground up.”

What is your current research focused on?

Research Ethics for All is a joint endeavor of Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy Dr. Ariel Schwartz, director of the MGH Institute’s Participatory Research Supporting Health, Inclusion, and Participation Lab and Syracuse University’s Professor of Public Health and Associate Dean of Research, Dr. Katherine McDonald. Its aim: to create an accessible research ethics training that can further the goal and process of hiring individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to work on research teams.

My cohort and faculty in the DPT program have served to challenge me throughout the curriculum and support me during my own personal growth and hurdles. Why Did you Choose The IHP?

I applied to the IHP for the reputation, but I chose to attend for the atmosphere. Never before have I been surrounded by a group of individuals who are so thoroughly committed to solidarity, inclusion, and overall betterment.
