The Performing Art of Science Presentation
In their presentations, research scientists often focus solely on their subject matter and leave the quality of their public speaking to chance. This workshop offers specific skills from the theater to become a more engaging and memorable speaker, whether at a professional conference, public event, job talk, or in the classroom. Topics include activating connection to the audience, clarifying purpose, moving from concept to structure, enhancing physical and vocal presence, managing stage fright, best uses of PowerPoint, and how to use stories and metaphors. In a highly interactive format, participants will have ample opportunity to practice these skills with personal coaching.

Intro to R and RMarkdown
In this workshop, you’ll be introduced to using R via RStudio. RStudio is a free graphical user interface (GUI) that makes running statistical analyses in R user friendly. We’ll show you how to load data into R, install packages, run descriptive statistics and simple visualizations, as well as show you how to run some basic analyses (e.g., correlations, t-tests, factorial ANOVA, linear regression). We’ll even introduce you to the “tidyverse”, which is a set of packages that make manipulating and visualizing data easier.
Bring a laptop that can connect to the Internet. You do not need to have R or RStudio installed on your computer to participate (although you are welcome to, and the links to do so are provided below).
